About This 12-Day Safari

This Uganda journey links wildlife encounters with opportunities to understand the places between the parks. Travel from Ziwa and Murchison Falls to Kibale, then spend several days around Queen Elizabeth before continuing to Bwindi. Community experiences at Bigodi, Katwe and a locally led Batwa visit add context to the landscapes. Lake Mburo rounds off the route with game viewing and a boat trip before the return to Entebbe or Kampala.

Where You Will Go

The places this safari visits, in the order you will reach them.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

The only place in Uganda where you can track wild southern white rhinos on foot.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest park, where the Victoria Nile forces through a narrow gorge and thunders over Murchison Falls.

Kibale Forest National Park

The “primate capital of the world”, famous for chimpanzee trekking and 13 primate species.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Savannah, crater lakes and the Kazinga Channel, with hippos, elephants and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage rainforest in south-western Uganda and home to around half of the world’s mountain gorillas.

Lake Mburo National Park

Uganda’s smallest savannah park, walkable and home to zebras, giraffes, elands and buffalo.

Day By Day Itinerary

Every day is planned by our local team and can be adjusted to your pace.

Day1
Murchison Falls National Park

Ziwa rhinos and Murchison Falls

Meet your guide early in Kampala or Entebbe and begin the journey north. At Ziwa, join a ranger-led rhino walk and learn about the sanctuary’s conservation work. Continue after lunch towards Murchison Falls, where a viewpoint visit introduces the river’s dramatic change of level. Finish the day at your chosen lodge, ready for an early start in the park.

Overnight: Pakuba Lodge, Murchison Falls area
Lunch and Dinner
Day2

A morning drive and afternoon river safari

Spend the morning searching Murchison’s savannah tracks for wildlife. Giraffes, buffaloes and antelope are among the animals to watch for, with predators possible on a fortunate drive. Pause for lunch before taking the afternoon boat excursion upstream. The approach towards the falls combines river scenery with opportunities to observe hippos, crocodiles and birds along the banks.

Overnight: Pakuba Lodge, Murchison Falls area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day3
Kibale Forest National Park

Travel to the Fort Portal and Kibale region

Depart Murchison Falls for a full day on the road towards Kibale. Stops along the way break the drive into manageable sections and introduce the rural landscape of western Uganda. A brief Fort Portal visit may be included if the day runs to schedule. Access to the Tooro palace is arranged in advance and should not be assumed on a late arrival.

Overnight: Kibale Forest Camp, Kibale area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day4
Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale forest and the Bigodi community

Join the morning chimpanzee trek after the required briefing at Kibale. Moving through the forest with a guide offers more than a search for primates, revealing connections between trees, insects and other wildlife. Later, visit Bigodi for a guided wetland and community experience. There may be time to meet local craft makers, with purchases left to your own choice.

Overnight: Kibale Forest Camp, Kibale area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day5
Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth and Katwe’s salt landscape

Travel towards Queen Elizabeth National Park through the foothill country around Kasese. Mountain views depend on cloud cover, so enjoy the wider scenery rather than expecting a clear summit panorama. Later, visit Katwe to hear how salt extraction shapes local working life. Follow your host’s guidance around the lake and return to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight: Elephant Hab Lodge, Queen Elizabeth area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day6

Wildlife on the plains and channel

Leave early for a game drive in the Kasenyi plains, where open views make animal behaviour easier to follow. Your guide explains what you are seeing and takes time with worthwhile sightings. After lunch, explore the Kazinga Channel by boat. The excursion follows its scheduled route rather than travelling the full length between the two lakes.

Overnight: Elephant Hab Lodge, Queen Elizabeth area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day7

Forest exploration and another game drive

A guided nature walk around Maramagambo is planned subject to current park access. Walking at forest pace creates opportunities to notice birds, butterflies and smaller details missed from a vehicle. Return for lunch and a rest before an afternoon wildlife drive. If the forest trail is unavailable, an agreed nature activity replaces it rather than an unannounced change to the programme.

Overnight: Elephant Hab Lodge, Queen Elizabeth area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day8
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Through Ishasha towards Bwindi

Travel south through Queen Elizabeth’s Ishasha sector on your way to Bwindi. Search the trees and open ground for lions, keeping expectations flexible as sightings vary. Continue into the highlands after a lunch stop. Your lodge is chosen in relation to the confirmed gorilla trekking sector, reducing unnecessary travel on the following morning.

Overnight: Bakiga Lodge, Bwindi area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day9

Gorillas and a community perspective

Begin the day with a ranger-led gorilla trek in Bwindi’s forest. The terrain can be steep and muddy, and the time needed to find the family differs from one day to another. After returning, a locally led Batwa cultural visit is planned if the trek finishes with sufficient time and you feel comfortable continuing. The visit centres on hosts’ own accounts of their heritage and present-day lives.

Overnight: Bakiga Lodge, Bwindi area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day10
Lake Mburo National Park

Travel to Lake Mburo

Leave Bwindi and travel east through the highlands towards the Mbarara region. Break the drive for lunch before entering Lake Mburo’s landscape of woodland, pasture and lakes. Check into your accommodation and rest after the transfer. A night wildlife drive is planned only when its operator, ranger arrangements and departure time have been confirmed.

Overnight: Rwakobo Rock, Lake Mburo area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day11
Lake Mburo National Park

Game viewing and Lake Mburo by boat

Head out for a morning drive, looking for zebras, impalas, giraffes and other animals using the park’s varied habitats. Allow time at sightings rather than treating the drive as a race between locations. After lunch, take a boat excursion for a closer look at the lake edge. Birdwatching and watching hippos from the vessel complement the morning’s land-based safari.

Overnight: Rwakobo Rock, Lake Mburo area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day12

A final park outing and return

Enjoy a short final wildlife outing before leaving Lake Mburo. A guided walk can be included as agreed, while horse riding is an optional activity with separate participation requirements and fees. Stop at the Equator crossing on the return road for photographs and lunch. Continue to Kampala or Entebbe with enough time for your onward arrangements.

Overnight: No overnight included
Breakfast and Lunch

When is the best time to take this safari?

Dry seasons run from December to February and June to September: easiest trails and best game viewing. March to May and October to November are wetter, greener and quieter.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Yes. Every Giravex itinerary can be adjusted to your dates, pace, budget and interests. Tell us what you would like to change and a trip specialist will tailor it for you.
