About This 18-Day Safari

Travel across Kenya on a broad camping circuit that combines wildlife reserves, highland walking and Rift Valley lakes. Begin in the Tsavo parks and Amboseli before turning north through Nairobi to Samburu and the Mount Kenya region. Continue through the Aberdares and lake country, then finish with dedicated safari time in the Masai Mara. The route offers variety rather than a short wildlife-only trip, with budget camps or simple accommodation confirmed for each stop.

  • Tsavo East and Tsavo West wildlife drives
  • Amboseli scenery and elephants
  • Samburu reserve game viewing
  • Ngare Ndare forest and a Mount Kenya foothill hike
  • Aberdare scenery and Lake Naivasha
  • Hell’s Gate and Elsamere visits
  • Bogoria, Baringo and Nakuru lake habitats
  • Two dedicated days in the Masai Mara

Where You Will Go

The places this safari visits, in the order you will reach them.

Amboseli National Park

Large elephant herds against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Lake Naivasha

A freshwater Rift Valley lake with hippos, boat trips and walking at Hell’s Gate.

Lake Nakuru National Park

A Rift Valley soda lake park with rhinos, flamingos and abundant birdlife.

Masai Mara National Reserve

Kenya’s great savannah reserve, famous for big cats and the wildebeest migration between July and October.

Day By Day Itinerary

Every day is planned by our local team and can be adjusted to your pace.

Day1

Nairobi to Tsavo East

Depart Nairobi early and travel towards Tsavo East. A lunch break divides the road journey before your introduction to the park. An afternoon game drive is planned where arrival and park-entry timing allow. Settle into the confirmed camp or simple accommodation for your first safari evening.

Overnight: Budget camping, Tsavo East area
Lunch and Dinner
Day2

A full day exploring Tsavo East

Spend the day exploring Tsavo East with a picnic lunch or an agreed lodge break. The guide selects tracks and landmarks that fit current conditions and wildlife reports. Aruba Dam, Lugard Falls or Mudanda Rock may feature where access and distances make them practical. Look for wildlife throughout the route without expecting every named landmark in one day.

Overnight: Budget camping, Tsavo East area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day3

From Tsavo East to Tsavo West

Enjoy a short morning wildlife outing before continuing towards Tsavo West. Changing terrain gives the next park a different character from the eastern plains. Explore selected areas after arrival, with Mzima Springs planned where access permits. End the day at the confirmed camp or guesthouse rather than extending the drive unnecessarily after dark.

Overnight: Budget camping, Tsavo West area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day4
Amboseli National Park

Shetani landscapes and Amboseli

Leave Tsavo West and visit the Shetani lava landscape if it fits the day’s road route. Continue to Amboseli with lunch arranged en route or at your accommodation. An afternoon drive introduces the park’s open plains and wetland edges. Views of Kilimanjaro are possible when cloud cover clears, but should not be expected on every visit.

Overnight: Budget camping, Amboseli area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day5
Amboseli National Park

Amboseli wildlife and Nairobi overnight

Take an early game drive before leaving Amboseli. Watch elephant behaviour and the wider landscape rather than concentrating only on mountain photographs. Travel back towards Nairobi with a lunch break. A Maasai community visit is optional and must be arranged with hosts and allowed for in the road schedule.

Overnight: Budget camping, Nairobi
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day6

North through Nanyuki to Samburu

Travel north from Nairobi through the Mount Kenya region towards Samburu. A stop around the Equator marker near Nanyuki breaks the drive. Continue through changing landscapes before reaching the reserve area. A first wildlife outing may be possible depending on arrival time, followed by your confirmed camping or lodge arrangements.

Overnight: Budget camping, Samburu area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day7

A dedicated Samburu wildlife day

Explore Samburu during morning and afternoon game drives, with a midday break. Look for animals suited to the drier northern landscape, including reticulated giraffes and other distinctive grazers. Riverine sections can provide contrasting habitats and further sightings. Community visits or camel rides are optional additions, leaving the main day focused on wildlife observation.

Overnight: Budget camping, Samburu area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day8

Ngare Ndare forest and the Mount Kenya region

Leave Samburu and travel towards the Mount Kenya foothills. An arranged guided walk at Ngare Ndare introduces forest scenery and its wildlife habitats. Waterfall or canopy experiences depend on the current visitor programme and access. Continue to your overnight base and prepare for the following day’s mountain walk.

Overnight: Budget camping, Mount Kenya region
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day9

Mount Kenya foothill hike

Begin at the agreed Mount Kenya entry point after completing the required arrangements. Walk towards the Old Moses area on a route matched to the group’s fitness and available time. The programme must allow for both the climb and return, rather than assuming a short one-way hike covers the whole day. Return to the arranged accommodation after the guide-led outing.

Overnight: Budget camping, Mount Kenya region
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day10
Lake Naivasha

Aberdare scenery and onward to Naivasha

Travel towards the Aberdare region for the agreed scenic or wildlife route. Forest, moorland and waterfall stops are selected according to road access and the onward schedule. Continue to Lake Naivasha after the visit. Because this combines sightseeing and driving, the final programme should keep the Aberdare section focused rather than trying to cover the entire park.

Overnight: Budget camping, Lake Naivasha area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day11

Hell’s Gate and Elsamere

Visit Hell’s Gate for an authorised walking, cycling or vehicle route as agreed. Follow the park’s current access guidance, particularly where any gorge section is restricted. Later, visit Elsamere for its conservation and historical interpretation where the visitor programme is available. Return to the Naivasha base for a second night in the lake region.

Overnight: Budget camping, Lake Naivasha area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day12

Bogoria on the way to Baringo

Leave Naivasha and travel towards Lake Bogoria. Visit suitable viewing areas with a local guide, maintaining distance from hot springs and restricted ground. Flamingo presence varies with lake conditions, so enjoy the wider landscape as well as the birds. Continue to Lake Baringo for your overnight stay.

Overnight: Budget camping, Lake Baringo area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day13

Lake Baringo boat outing and local walk

Take a guided boat excursion to explore Lake Baringo’s birdlife and shoreline. The local guide manages safe viewing distances around wildlife and suitable landing areas. A later nature walk provides another opportunity to study the area’s habitats. The programme focuses on observation and interpretation rather than handling snakes or other wild animals.

Overnight: Budget camping, Lake Baringo area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day14
Lake Nakuru National Park

Travel to Lake Nakuru

Drive towards Lake Nakuru after breakfast and check into your overnight base. An afternoon game drive introduces woodland, grassland and the lake edge. Look for rhinos and other mammals where they occur along the chosen route. Bird numbers and flamingo presence change with water conditions, so these remain opportunities rather than promises.

Overnight: Budget camping, Lake Nakuru area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day15
Masai Mara National Reserve

The road to the Masai Mara

Leave Nakuru for the Masai Mara, with lunch and rest stops arranged around the journey. Reach the reserve area and enter for a wildlife drive if the arrival schedule permits. The open landscape gives a different perspective after the forests and lakes. Settle at the confirmed camp with two full days ahead to explore without another long transfer.

Overnight: Budget camping, Masai Mara area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day16
Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara plains and predators

Explore the reserve’s plains on a full wildlife day. Follow recent sightings and spend time watching behaviour where animals are found. Lunch may be a picnic or a camp break according to the agreed route. Return for the evening and discuss which habitats to revisit on the following day.

Overnight: Budget camping, Masai Mara area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day17

A second full day in the Mara

Use the second dedicated day to explore different areas or return to productive wildlife locations. Seasonal herd movements help guide the route but do not guarantee migration or a river crossing. Ballooning is an optional early activity booked separately and subject to conditions. The core programme remains guided game viewing across the reserve’s varied habitats.

Overnight: Budget camping, Masai Mara area
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day18

Final wildlife outing and Nairobi return

Take a short early drive if it fits comfortably with the return transfer. Depart the Mara and travel towards Nairobi with a lunch stop. An optional community visit can be included only when reserved and compatible with your onward timing. Arrive at the agreed hotel or airport, leaving a generous margin for traffic and flight check-in.

Overnight: No overnight included

Practical Planning

Things worth knowing before you book.

Confirm whether each night uses camping, a hut or a guesthouse, and whether sleeping bags, bedding and camping equipment are included.

The Mount Kenya hike and Aberdare transfer days require operator review for walking duration and road access.

Hot-air ballooning, village visits, camel rides and any swimming activity are optional; migration viewing depends on seasonal herd movements.
