About This 6-Day Safari
Walk the Rwenzori Central Circuit without adding a technical summit attempt. The six-day route moves from lower forest to high mountain vegetation and lakes, using established huts along the way. It is a demanding trek with wet ground, substantial climbs and long days on foot. The route and pacing are confirmed with the mountain operator before booking and can change in response to weather, access or the group’s progress.
- Nyabitaba and John Matte approach stages
- Bujuku Valley and alpine vegetation
- High-level circuit towards Kitandara
- Descent through Guy Yeoman
- Basic mountain hut accommodation
- A trekking itinerary without a planned summit ascent

Where You Will Go
The places this safari visits, in the order you will reach them.
The “Mountains of the Moon”: snow-capped peaks, alpine moorland and Uganda’s toughest trekking.
Day By Day Itinerary
Every day is planned by our local team and can be adjusted to your pace.
Forest approach to Nyabitaba
Complete registration and meet the guides and porters before starting at Nyakalengija. The first stage follows the lower forest route towards Nyabitaba. Climbing and wet footing require a steady pace rather than rushing to the hut. Arrive for the evening meal and check the team’s plan for the next day.
Nyabitaba to John Matte
Leave Nyabitaba for the higher stage towards John Matte. Follow the guides through changing vegetation and sections of uneven ground. Rest breaks and a measured walking pace help manage the day’s demands. Reach the hut, dry your kit where possible and organise what you need for the next stage.
The Bujuku Valley stage
Continue towards Bujuku through the circuit’s wet highland terrain. The landscape becomes more open as forest gives way to higher vegetation and mountain views when clouds lift. Your guides choose the suitable line across difficult ground. Overnight at Bujuku and review the following day’s high-level crossing.
Across the circuit to Kitandara
Follow the Central Circuit towards the Kitandara lakes and hut. This stage stays on the trekking circuit rather than adding the Elena summit approach. Conditions can make the crossing slow, so the programme follows the mountain team’s judgement. Reach Kitandara for the night and prepare for the descent stages ahead.
Towards Guy Yeoman
Continue from Kitandara towards Guy Yeoman on the agreed circuit route. The day includes demanding changes of level rather than a simple downhill walk. Keep to the guide team’s pacing through rocky and wet sections. Settle at the hut and plan the final return to the trailhead.
Return through Nyabitaba to the trailhead
Descend towards Nyabitaba and continue through the lower trail to Nyakalengija. The final day still requires concentration on slippery ground and uneven steps. Complete the trek with the guide team and meet your arranged road transfer. A post-trek hotel night can be added for recovery before travelling further.
Where You Will Spend The Nights
Basic mountain huts form the overnight accommodation on the trek. Hotel nights before and after the mountain programme are arranged separately. Confirm hut arrangements, bedding and personal equipment requirements with the specialist operator before booking.
