9 Days Rwenzori Central Circuit Three Peak Expedition
About This 9-Day Safari
Explore the Central Circuit on a demanding mountain expedition with planned attempts on Mount Speke, Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak and Mount Baker. The route passes forest, wet highland terrain, alpine lakes and established mountain huts. This is a technical climbing programme for appropriately prepared participants, with the specialist mountain team responsible for route decisions. Weather, access, terrain and participant condition can change the schedule, and reaching all three summits is not guaranteed.
- Central Circuit approach through Nyabitaba and John Matte
- Bujuku Valley and high mountain lakes
- A planned Mount Speke attempt from Bujuku
- Elena approach for Margherita Peak
- A planned Mount Baker attempt from Kitandara
- Descent through Guy Yeoman and Nyabitaba

The “Mountains of the Moon”: snow-capped peaks, alpine moorland and Uganda’s toughest trekking.
Day By Day Itinerary
Every day is planned by our local team and can be adjusted to your pace.
Nyakalengija trailhead to Nyabitaba
Meet the mountain team at the trailhead for registration, equipment checks and the final briefing. Begin the walk through the lower forest on the Central Circuit route. The climb introduces the wet and uneven terrain that will shape the days ahead. Reach Nyabitaba Hut and rest while the team reviews the next stage and the group’s progress.
Towards John Matte Hut
Continue from Nyabitaba through forest and higher vegetation zones on the route towards John Matte. The ground can be slippery, so follow the mountain guides’ pacing and route instructions. Breaks provide time to observe the surroundings without losing the day’s steady progress. Arrive at the hut and prepare dry clothing and equipment for the following stage.
Bujuku Valley and the higher camps
Leave John Matte for the Bujuku stage of the circuit. Wet terrain and changing vegetation create a very different walking environment from the lower forest. Approach the lake and valley under the guidance of the mountain team. Overnight at Bujuku, where tomorrow’s planned climb is reviewed against current conditions and the group’s readiness.
Planned Mount Speke attempt
A Mount Speke attempt is planned from Bujuku under the specialist guides’ direction. The team determines the start time, equipment and safe route for the day. Summit progress depends on conditions and participant readiness rather than a fixed promise in the itinerary. Return to Bujuku for rest, with any revised plan discussed by the expedition leader.
Move towards Elena Hut
Continue from the Bujuku area towards Elena as directed by your mountain guides. This stage places the group nearer the Mount Stanley summit approach. The walking pace and breaks are managed with the demands of the next day in mind. At the hut, check technical equipment and review the summit plan before resting.
Margherita attempt and descent to Kitandara
Begin the planned Margherita Peak attempt at the time set by the mountain team. Technical sections and any glacier travel are managed by qualified climbing guides using the appropriate equipment. A turnaround may be necessary even when the summit is close. After the attempt, descend towards Kitandara only as conditions and the team’s judgement permit.
Planned Mount Baker attempt
From the Kitandara base, a Mount Baker attempt is planned if the expedition leader considers it suitable. Route conditions, weather and the group’s recovery from previous stages determine whether the climb proceeds. Follow the guides’ instructions throughout the ascent and descent. Return to Kitandara for the night, or accept a revised descent plan where that is the safer operational choice.
Kitandara to Guy Yeoman
Leave the Kitandara area and continue along the circuit towards Guy Yeoman. The stage combines further climbing with a substantial descent across varied mountain ground. Your guides manage the pace and any difficult sections. Reach the hut and prepare for the final descent rather than treating the lower elevation as the end of the trek.
Complete the descent to Nyakalengija
Descend under the mountain team’s direction towards Nyabitaba and the lower trailhead. Wet paths and tired legs still require careful attention during this final stage. Complete the trek formalities and meet the arranged onward transfer. A nearby overnight after the descent can be quoted so you do not need to continue immediately on a long road journey.
Where You Will Spend The Nights
Basic mountain huts form the overnight accommodation on the trek. Hotel nights before and after the mountain programme are arranged separately. Confirm hut arrangements, bedding and personal equipment requirements with the specialist operator before booking.

Practical Planning
Things worth knowing before you book.

Allow separate travel nights around the trek and consider additional mountain days where the operator recommends them.
