After days of early starts, dusty roads and long drives, a few quiet days on the Indian Ocean can be the best part of a safari. Zanzibar, the spice island off the coast of Tanzania, is the classic place to do it.
Why it works
- It balances the trip. Safari is active and demanding; the beach is the reward.
- It is easy to reach. Zanzibar has flights from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Nairobi and other East African airports.
- There is something for every kind of traveller: history, snorkelling, spice farms, good food and long, quiet beaches.
What to do in Zanzibar
Stone Town
The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, carved doors, markets and old merchant houses. A guided walk gives context to Zanzibar's history as a trading port and a spice centre.

Spice tour
Visit a spice farm to smell and taste cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and pepper where they grow, and enjoy fresh tropical fruit.
Jozani Forest
This small forest is home to the red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth, and is easy to visit on the way to the east coast.
Snorkelling and boat trips
Coral reefs and sandbanks around the island are good for snorkelling, and a dhow sunset cruise is a relaxed way to end the day.
Choosing your beach
- North (Nungwi and Kendwa): good for swimming at most states of the tide, lively sunsets and a wide choice of places to eat.
- East (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe): long white beaches, kitesurfing and a more relaxed feel. The tide goes out a long way, so swimming depends on the time of day.
- Stone Town and the west: easy for culture, food and short stays.
When to go
The drier months from about June to October are the most popular, and December to February are hot and good for the beach. The heaviest rains fall from March to May, when some lodges close, but rates can be lower.
How long to stay
Three to five nights is enough for most people: one day for Stone Town, one for a spice tour or a boat trip, and the rest on the sand.
Practical tips
- Tanzania requires its own visa, separate from the East Africa Tourist Visa that covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. We will confirm what applies to your passport.
- Dress modestly in Stone Town and away from the resort areas, out of respect for the local culture.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Check baggage rules on domestic flights, which are often stricter than on international ones.
Combining Zanzibar with Uganda
Many of our guests finish gorilla and wildlife safaris in Uganda, or the Masai Mara in Kenya, with a beach stay in Zanzibar. We handle the flights and transfers so the journey is simple.
Common questions
Is Zanzibar part of Tanzania?
Yes. It is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, which is why the same entry rules apply.
Can I go straight from a gorilla trek to the beach?
Yes, but it is better to build in a night in between so that you arrive rested.
Is Zanzibar suitable for children?
Yes. Many resorts welcome families, and the calm beaches suit younger children at the right time of tide.
